i'm curled up beneath a heavy wool camping blanket this evening, staring at the empty, black woodstove, wishing it was aglow, warming me to the bone. It is a cold Maine evening here in the woods near the river -- i heard the first batch of Canada geese fly south over my roof at supper time (be still my beating heart). Maybe this glass of merlot i am sipping will warm me up in time. I do welcome the change in season and temperature -- I love to bundle up and dress myself in woolen sweaters, knitted hats and wrist warmers. comfort. And i get to wear my new soft leather cowboy boots -- ok, i'll admit, they make me feel like a sexy mommy -- i say that (chuckle, chuckle) because you can often find me in sweats behind the wheel of a minivan:)

i am feeling dreamy and so excited for this weekend -- I get to spend a day with the lovely Susanna in one of my favorite places. i can't wait to share our adventures with you!

soup. A favorite part of Fall and Winter. i love to throw together homemade soups -- i make it up as i go along. Today i used the last carrots and kale from the garden to make a hearty chicken soup. If you want to try, i took notes:
throw together:
1 chopped onion
5-6 leeks (thinly slice the white part)
5 garlic cloves finely chopped
4-5 sliced carrots
sweet potato -- cubed, leave skin on
chopped kale (between 1 and 2 cups) -- be sure to slice the leaves off either side of the stem (don't use stem, as it is bitter)
1/2 tsp dill
1/2 tsp parsley
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
chicken cut into small pieces
about 48 oz chicken broth/stock
cook spaghetti noodles separately (chop and add to soup when it's ready)
you will find that the dill adds a special flavor -- it's officially the secret ingredient:)
i have the perfect music to accompany your culinary creating -- i am IN LOVE with this band -- I want to play that bass drum so badly -- Mmm, those rhythms make your soul move!

These images have a wonderfully serene vibe to them. The soft pale subdued tones are just perfect.
Such a sweet photo of you and your daughter, a moment to cherish.
Your soup recipe sounds very yummy and soul warming, I'm so pleased that you took notes.
interesting combinations in your soup: sweet potatoes and kale with chicken. I'm going to try it sometime.
Here in California it still will be some months before it evenings get cold. We're still in the high 70ties! So, I have to wait with my sweaters, hats, scarves and boots (since they're also my favorite wear!)
Susan,
Have a wonderful time in NY. Looking forward to seeing what you get into. The pic of the leaf is incredible!

I think we'll probably make our first fire at the cottage tonight. Nothing like sipping a glass of wine in front of the fire while catching up on the past week.
Your pictures are absolutely "dreamy" themselves! Your post is perfect for a chilly autumn day in Chicago (as we await the Olympic news). LOVE this time of year and all it inspires! Happy Weekending!!!
Fall is extra beautiful through your eyes and imagination, beautiful Susan ! The soup sounds yum !

Such sweetness in that first mommy-daughter photo. And the soup looks yummy.
I have to admit, this is also a favorite time of year for me. Flannet sheets and scarves to keep me warm all day and night. I especially love what I can get @ the local farmer's market right now...like you said, everything for a fabulous homemade soup with some warm, crusty bread for dipping. It's 10AM and I'm craving this now!
I need to get some pictures posted to Flickr from your online class, I'm really enjoying Susan, you've done an incredible job with the class...congratulations again.

Oh my gosh! I didn't even finish reading your post, but rushed to comment when I saw the picture of your sexy boots. My husband got me those exact same boots (Frye, right?) for Christmas last year. I LOVE them. They make me feel sexy, too.
Back again. And so excited for you that you get to have a blog date with Susannah. That's really, really terrific. Lucky you. Lucky Susannah. Will you place winged messengers all over NYC?

Hurray for warm fires, comfy sweaters and homemade soup! And a special hurray because I get to finally meet you in person tomorrow morning!! Whoohoo!
I just dyed my hair for the event and I'm about to write down the addresses of must-see places so we know where to go.
Your new boots, btw, look great! I'll forewarn you that I'll be wearing godawful sneakers. Doctor's order. Don't hold it against me. *grin*
See ya by the clock in Grand Central!
I just LOVE your photos! And it all sounds so cozy and wonderful, and I love the veggies too. I totally understand the sexy mommy boots, I also have some in my closet that need to come out now that its fall. I also drive a mini van and throw on what ever is convenient most days! :)
Susan! These photos just warm my heart! It's snowing today & when I saw this post I was comforted that someone else loves donning woolen hats & other snuggly warm things.
Congrats on your new macro lens - what unbelievable detail in those photos! I can't wait to see how you incorporate them into your wonderful digital art.
Stay warm!

OOh yes, I know what you mean about that cosy feeling, I switched the central heating on for the first time tonight. It seemed that October arrived and shooed out a few degrees of heat along with the back end of September. Very nice boots indeed. I wrote a whole post about my new boots yesterday and today dug out my killer heel boots safely boxed away over the summer - there is definitely something about boots...
I'm loving the thought of that soup. I'm going to have to give that a try. jan
Hi Susan

this soup sounds divine. and me too, on the canadian geese. i have far too many polaroids from last year, my obsession to capture them in formation an expensive experiment.

Susana is super cool and so are you!
I can't wait for your next class sessions!!!
Two wonderful women together in New York. What a day it must have been. I can only imagine and hope for a repeat that I can share.
