hello my friends. i have been dreaming of warm, lemony sunshine that goes bone deep, livens you, gets you running barefoot down the fresh cut lawn without a care in the world. for now, i stand near the woodstove filled with sweet, burning ash and oak logs -- the heat does warm to the bone, but calls me to rest instead of run, curled up in a wool blanket drinking mug after mug of lemon tea, sweetened with honey. I'm noticing that the light stays out a bit longer than it did earlier in the season, and i feel a little stirring inside -- like spring fluttering its eyelids before waking.

i really do enjoy winter cold and snow, no fibs, but it has been a bit too much of a good thing this year. Single digit temperatures have been the norm this winter, sometimes just barely climbing into the double digits. that means it is often too cold to enjoy the snow and we wind up staying in a lot...

...watching icicles melt and freeze, drips frozen at their tips. Staying in can have its perks if we get creative. We make art with this fun book, this, and projects with this one. Snuggling, reading library books in mommy and daddy's big bed is another pleasure -- Rose asks for this book every time. Time for baking too -- let's see -- this week we've done vanilla almond valentine cupcakes with plenty of pretty sprinkles, banana bread and homemade playdough. The kids play "beach" (they toss the couch pillows on the floor to make the waves) and dress up in front of their new mirror - 'cowboy witch fairies' and growling lions with magic wands lurking all about the house -- and me, i am given the honorary role of "monster mommy" -- all i have to do is shriek a bit here and there when they run to me. they scream and throw their hands up in the air, run away and come back to do it all again.

Wild adventure! That's what my blog feature in the latest Artful Blogging is all about. Below are a few sneak peeks of my photos that they featured. I enjoyed discovering some wonderful bloggers in there that are new to me. I highly recommend picking up a copy.

sunday morning paper 'arts and entertainment' section with coffee. i look forward to it. simple pleasures.

and i had to share this gal's music -- her latest album is one i play over and over.

My son is doing well, but we are still in limbo until another appointment at the end of the month. i do feel an inner calm about it and am trusting in that instinctual feeling. Thank you for your warm, sweet, comforting words -- i wrap them around me like a blanket -- they mean more to me than you may think.:)

I always enjoy a visit here Susan. Not only is it visually pleasing with your dynamic photography, your word pictures are warming.

This has been a brutal winter, no question and I smile at how blessed your children are -- a mother (and father too I suspect!) who is extremely creative and imaginative and has given these 2 children the world outside the world...they have already developed strong imaginations of their own. While other parents might be tearing their hair out because the children have been cooped up indoors so long, you have given them a magic carpet to "possibilities". I love it.

And I love your inner calm about your son and his health. Trust that intuition...I know you will, you are a great believer in that. It won't let you down ♥

Hi Susan! Isn't it so wonderful to find anticipation in the changing of the seasons? Each one has its joys but it is fun to be looking to the next. I wish I knew about Artful Blogger- I just saw it yesterday but chose Sommerset Gallery instead b/c your name was on the front of it (and I love the Halloween portraits). I will have to go back and get the Artful Blogger one...congrats on being featured- you so deserve it!
Have a great weekend! It's supposed to warm up to the mid 50's in Chicago (but then snow by the end of next week- gotta love it).

I love your posts Susan! Every time I feel stressed or bummed, I just read (or re-read) your current post and it just calms me right down.

And I'm sure your little boy will be fine.

Hi Susan,

I think of you alot during this time of year when it gets cold out and I wonder how you do it! It has been in the 20's all week here in GA and I am hating every bit of it!

I giggled at the pic of your daughter eating with chop sticks. Maybe I could give a set to Shelby to use and maybe she would take more interest in eating her noodles! Fun.

Congrats on the Artful Blogging publication. You should have been in that mag a long time ago! I look forward to seeing it.

The picture with you holding the coffee cup is one of my favorites from one of your posts last year.

Have a great weekend.

I find myself looking forward to Artful Blogging, and have searched in my bookstore many times...hoping it will be there! I am waiting...patiently.
Today we have a beautiful glimpse of Spring. The perks of living in the south. Come July I am not so sure =) But, Texas is my home, and I have a huge inner loyality to it. I love seeing your snow pictures, as it gives me a look inside the beauty of it all. Your pictures are always inspiring, and prompt me to search inside when taking more of mine =)

I can remember it as five minutes ago last winter you were waiting for it to pass and here we are again in midst of it. It is so different how you experience the seasons in the countryside and like here in a city.

I do not know what your son has... (language-problem)but I hear in your voice it is worrying. I am so happy you feel peace now Susan!

And compliments AGAIN to your blog and for the amount of LIFE and thankfulness it radiates. And how amazingly artistic you always present your posts.

in the chaos of moving i haven't kept up as much as i would like... and as i click through to your always beautiful photography i am so inspired over the wonderful things still coming into your art-filled life (congratulations on being featured in Artful Blogging)...

there is also what weighs heavy in a mother's heart...that feeling of helplessness for her beloved little boy...the mother warrior who wants so much to protect him...and then there is also the truth that love is all there is and the circle of love that surrounds you and surrounds him is the greatest gift of all...he is so obviously the most precious of gifts in your lives...and you all are the most precious gifts in his...

wrapping myself in the blanket of the love and support is where i find the calm in the center of the storm...

my heartfelt best wishes for him and for you...

I soooo know what you mean about winter and wishing for warmth! But it really does feel like the season has begun its slow shift towards Spring... even at 5:25 there is still a hint of light in the sky. We're coming out of the tunnel! I'm so glad you're feeling better about your son. Those inner feelings say a lot... and I am sure they will be confirmed when you see the doctor again. Finally - congrats on your inclusion in Artful Blogging! Your blog is beautiful to see and read:) Namaste & xox - Carla

The best memories I have of my childhood are the ones I spent using my imagination and creating my own world of play and discovery. Though the winter is long, how wonderful that it is being spent making those types of memories in the minds of your beautiful children.

Sending yellow smiles and blue and beach-y sighs...
